Petta Technology has developed a comprehensive spam filtering system based on Open Source technology. This system, which is already in use internally at Petta Technology, is based on three distinct Open Source spam filtering packages and has vastly reduced the amount of spam we receive without causing false positives. We have tested this system in depth and found that it handles large load well; we are currently improving the system so that it can work with existing e-mail infrastructures like MS Exchange.

The system currently has two major advantages over other spam filtering software. First, by using the combined knowledge of different spam filtering packages, we vastly reduce the amount of spam that gets through the filters, and prevent real messages from getting blocked. Most complaints with Open Source spam protection software are either "It doesn't get enough spam" or "It blocks too many things that aren't spam". By combining the capabilities of multiple systems, we have reached a happy medium - one package failing to detect a message does not let the message get through to a user, but one package overzealously marking real messages as spam does not block the message.

Second, our system stores all of the mail information in a MySQL database, making spam filter training easier and more efficient. All of the spam filtering software we use can be trained - successful results cause the spam filter to be more certain about its results, and incorrect results cause the spam filter to change its opinions about what constitutes spam. By training multiple pieces of spam filtering software on the entire mail database, we get much more accurate results much faster than any individual system.

We are working to improve this system's ease of use, setup, modification, and development. We hope that in the future, this system will combine the best aspects of all Open Source spam filtering systems and eliminate the problem of spam once and for all.
